A Year in Color (Teacher Hend)
Four panels, each 15 ½" x 24" unframed (framed measurements to come)
This artwork is a simulated glass painting created on four acrylic panels representing the changing seasons. The project helps children learn color recognition, spacing, and how to keep colors separated within defined areas, similar to traditional glass painting techniques. As they work, children develop hand-eye coordination, careful brush control and attention to detail. By completing each seasonal panel, they also gain an understanding of how nature changes throughout the year while expressing creativity through color and design.

The Seven Dwarfs (Teacher Matt)
While 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of Disneyland, the students at Russian Hill School celebrate an abstract celebration: exploring the personalities of seven characters made famous from Disney’s feature-length cartoon, Snow White and the Dwarfs. The dwarfs first appeared in the Grimm fairy tale that held pride of place among the public domain before Walt and his Disney artists immortalized Doc, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, Grumpy, Happy and Dopey. It is off to work we went! These seven acrylic paintings can be displayed together as a larger collection or placed individually throughout a home as talking points of modern art experience. Just as the dwarfs worked collectively in the story, the individual paintings have a connection, as notable thorn-like brush strokes appear in most of the works, suggesting the woods where the dwarfs reside.
THE PROCESS:
Each of the students was interviewed by Teacher Matt, answering specific questions regarding each of the seven dwarfs:
1) What color do you think of when you hear this dwarf’s name?
2) If you went to a drawing table, what would you draw to depict the dwarf?
Tabulating the results, Teacher Matt formulated a design and color strategy for each of the seven individual paintings. Working with a variety of brush sizes, as well as a water mister and a variety of acrylic painting, canvases came to life. Each painting was primed with gesso to help layers of color to adhere. The frames contribute to the forest world of the dwarfs- just as the abstract design of the various paintings may inspire discussion for the viewer, the paintings were infused with charm, humor, and energy. Just like any good fantasy or childhood!
